GREGORY POWELL TEXTILES is a multidisciplinary textiles studio. Practices include weaving, hand dying, and custom sewing.
I first became interested in yarn and textiles as a child, running around my grandparents’ butcher store in Pittsburgh, PA. To keep me entertained they would offer me large rolls of cotton twine used to wrap the meats of patrons. Some of my earliest memories are of using string to create patterns and shapes.
While in college my formal studying of textiles began while studying theater design and fiber arts at TylerSchool of Art in Philadelphia. My textile practice began focusing on modern art influences as well as traditional weaving designs and techniques.
My grandparents’ passion for food and entertaining has continued to influence me as prop and set designer and as a textile designer specializing in the highest quality goods that are not only beautiful, but functional.
